Nature and architecture aside, Suchitoto is also quite important historically. The town and surrounding landscape were a focal point during the Salvadoran civil war of the 1980s.

There are so many wonderful things to do in Suchitoto. Whether you’re looking for something new or just want to escape the coastal heat; You have come to the right place.

Suchitoto ended up being one of our favorite places in all of El Salvador. The people are amazing, the views are stunning, the air is fresh and the atmosphere is perfect.

We hope you enjoy your time in Suchitoto as much as we do!

Grandmother’s House, a unique place in Suchitoto

The emblematic corner house, which is located on the north side of the Santa Lucía parish church and located in the heart of the city of Suchitoto, is a classic representation of the colonial architecture of Suchitoto of yesteryear. According to its public deed, it is a “house covered with tiles and its corresponding urban plot, composed of a room, a corner room and two more that face the street and a hallway that faces the west, the property located in the Center from the city of Suchitoto. Said house was owned by Mrs. Doña Carmen Herrera, widow of Puente, distinguished lady of Suchitoto; Then it was sold to Mr. Don Rafael Vaquero Alvarado, before the offices of the notary public Doctor Don Luis Rivas Palacios, on August twenty-six, one thousand nine hundred and forty-nine (1949) and registered by transfer in favor of Mrs.& Mrs. MARÍA ANTONIA CAÑAS DE VAQUERO on March fifteenth, one thousand nine hundred and eighty-four (03/15/1984) and in two thousand nine, registered by transfer in favor of the Vaquero Cañas Succession.

In the 70’s, the adjacent property located in the Santa Lucia passage was incorporated into said property, which was used as a parking lot for agricultural machinery and a service area of the main house. In 1980, due to the armed conflict, both properties suffered vandalism and looting, losing furniture, tools, tools, paintings and other assets that, because they had been inherited from generation to generation, were considered family jewels that were kept there. In those years, when Doña María Antonia Cañas de Vaquero separated and sold the house that had been annexed.

Casa de la Abuela currently operates on that nice corner, which is already a cultural reference in the city thanks to its art exhibitions, sales of crafts and souvenirs, as well as the cultural work it carries out in coordination with other local initiatives. The moment the visitor enters Casa de la Abuela, they breathe peace and tranquility, due to its atmosphere and serenity that its unique architecture transmits.

Casa de la Abuela, before being a gallery that housed the National Institute of Suchitoto (INSU), also housed the specialist technicians who studied the vestiges and traces of Ciudad Vieja (located 6 km from Suchitoto and which is in studies to propose the aforementioned site as a World Heritage Site). In 1994, hand in hand with the Peace Accords, the Soto Gallery was installed, which contributed significantly to the cultural resurgence of the city, thanks to the work of the painter Clara Ángulo de Soto.

It was in the year 2008 and within the framework of the celebration of Holy Week, that CASA DE LA ABUELA begins operations, as a Gift Shop & Souvenirs, whose inauguration was attended by Mrs. María Antonia Cañas de Vaquero, giving her blessing to the opening by Father Julio Cesar Martínez Parish Priest of the Santa Lucia Church. From that date until the present, it has been developing important exhibitions of painting, sculpture, and crafts, thereby contributing to the cultural development of the city of the bird and the flower.

It should be noted that Casa de la Abuela won 2nd place in the Altares de la Cruz Festival in its May 2008 edition and first place in the Best Classic Balcony contest, awarded by the Suchitoto Tourism Development Association (Adeturs). and the Municipal Mayor’s Office in August 2009.

For the celebration of Holy Week in 2012, at the request of our clients and friends, a new project begins, opening the first Coffee Shop in the city, our biggest bet being drip coffee, a traditional method in which the best flavors of our high-altitude coffee blend grown in El Salvador.

With the passing of daily chores, Casa de la Abuela little by little became a friendly Petit Hotel with colonial style, uniquely located in the heart of the historic center of the city.

Casa de la Abuela is characterized, along with other Suchitotense houses, by its triple entrance in the corner, each door ending in lowered arches, which are repeated in the doors and windows, adding to it the embroidery of its elegant balconies and the characteristic patio surrounded by wide corridors give it an air of elegance and distinction.
