Tsim Sha Tusi Tower Clock

Situated at Hong Kong Cultural Centre Plaza in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, very near to the Star Ferry Pier, is the former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower, popularly known as Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower. Built in 1915, the 44-meter clock tower is surrounded by clocks and has a strong steam train era flair. It is constructed of red brick and granite.

Completing one year before the railway station, it was originally a part of the Kowloon-Canton Railway’s Tsim Sha Tsui station. Once the British railway terminal in the Far East, the historic Tsim Sha Tsui station is rumoured to have been the starting point for the longest train in history to travel across continental Europe to Hong Kong.

Many mainland refugees arrived at the old railway station before World War II via the Kowloon-Canton railway, establishing new lives and strewing historical artifacts throughout. Moving the Tsim Sha Tsui railway station to Hung Hom (now Hung Hom station) occurred in 1975. At the behest of Hong Kong residents, the clock tower was kept after the old station was destroyed in 1978. Reminiscent of Hong Kong’s contemporary past, the Clock Tower was formally designated as a Statutory Monument and made protected in 1990.

A southern flair is given to the clock tower by rows of tall coconut trees that stretch from the Star Ferry Pier to the distant tower. The vibrant lights of the city illuminate this famous structure every night. On significant days, the fountain next to the bell tower will be as vibrantly decorated as the avenue of stars, in contrast to the bell tower next to it.
